Course title: Dystussia Assessment & Treatment in Dysphagia Management
Presenter and credentials: Grace Koehler, MS SLP
Speaker bio: Grace Koehler has been a Speech Language Pathologist working in Upper Airway Disorders at Bayhealth Medical Center for 8 years. She now primarily works in the acute care setting in dysphagia management. She received her MS from Teachers College, Columbia University in 2017 and BS from George Washington University in 2012.
Course description: Cough dysfunction (dystussia) often co-occurs in patients with dysphagia. Assessing cough function during clinical swallow evaluations can aid in identifying patients at risk for airway invasion & pneumonia, support the need for further instrumentation, and guide treatment planning. Treating dystussia through strength and/or skill-based approaches can maximize airway protection & reduce dysphagia-related pulmonary complications.
Course instructional level: Introductory
Instructional methods: Lecture, powerpoint, case studies
Learning objectives: Identify dystussia & it’s relationship with dysphagia. Explain how to identify dystussia, and how to use cough measurements in dysphagia assessment. Summarize types of therapy to target dystussia and their importance in dysphagia management.

In order to earn a certificate of completion for this course, participants must attend the full session, complete a post-course self-assessment, and course evaluation. Participants must indicate when signing up for the course if they would like their participation reported to ASHA CE.
Partial credit will not be awarded, attendance will be monitored throughout the presentation.
A post-test will be sent to all attendees following the event and must be completed and returned to DSHA within the stated time frame in order to receive a certificate of attendance.
Additionally, in order to receive a certificate of attendance, an attendee must be a registered DSHA member or, pay the non-member registration fee in advance of the event. Failure to meet one of these conditions will result in the attendee not receiving their certificate of attendance and their attendance will not be reported to ASHA.
1.5 PDHs will be offered for attendance and successful completion of post presentation testing and evaluation.
